Background

In the cloud-service market, China Mobile has long been committed to cloud-computing research and application, launching the “Big Cloud” program as early as 2007. At the 2017 China Mobile Cloud Computing Conference held in Suzhou under the theme “Big Cloud, new IT, new power,” China Mobile officially released Big Cloud 4.0, aiming to drive change in China’s IT technology structure and support intelligent operations and service improvement for enterprises in every industry. After a decade of hard work, China Mobile’s “Big Cloud” thus opened a new chapter.

Cloud computing has become a key element of China Mobile’s “Big Connectivity” strategy. Relying on cloud-computing infrastructure, China Mobile will expand from pipe-access connectivity to platform-level connectivity and end-to-end infrastructure services, deepen connectivity and improve connection quality; relying on cloud computing and big-data platforms, it will create intelligent, software-defined, customized digital services and support China Mobile’s digital transformation.

Requirements

China Mobile Software is China Mobile’s cloud-facility builder, cloud-service provider and cloud-ecosystem aggregator. Centered on Mobile Cloud operations, its products and services are widely used in government, finance, manufacturing, transportation, healthcare and other industries. From 2014 to date, China Mobile Big Cloud has helped the government-and-enterprise branch build 7 resource pools and manage one provincial resource pool, at a scale of 10,000 servers, helping that branch provide cloud computing and big-data services to tens of thousands of enterprise customers. Beginning in 2019, the Mobile Big Cloud platform planned data centers at a scale of more than 100,000 servers.

Solution

The Big Cloud platform includes a unified cloud-management platform, software-defined equipment, a distributed architecture, containerization and DevOps agile development; “full service” includes multi-layer XaaS covering IaaS, PaaS and SaaS, fusing cloud computing, big data and other technologies, large-scale instances, multi-scenario services and cross-industry applications; the “large ecosystem” includes embracing open source, leading the community, aggregating partners and building a new ecosystem.

In 2019, 1,860 servers were used for phase-nine expansion of Mobile Cloud. In 2020, 1,030 servers were used for phase-ten expansion of Mobile Cloud.
