A key geology platform for a research institute

In recent years, domestic oil and gas demand has grown rapidly and upstream exploration and production have gradually recovered. The Geological Exploration and Development Research Institute of CNPC Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Co., Ltd. (the Institute) has increased investment in exploration and production and uses informatization to offer owners a wider range of services.

The integrated geology support platform (the Geology Platform) that Sugon built for the Institute has now gone live. It stably supports seismic data processing and interpretation, fine reservoir description, comprehensive well-logging research, and comprehensive geological evaluation, giving the Institute a foundation for continued performance growth.

An intelligent integrated platform for a new exploration research model

The Institute’s service projects span a wide range of businesses, with complex data types, high research difficulty, demanding scientific and technical requirements, and a heavy workload. Traditional platforms fall far short of research and production needs. The Institute planned the Geology Platform to fit the exploration and production research model under new conditions, speeding research, widening its scope, and raising efficiency.

On the Geology Platform, the Institute will move all core business—from production operations and engineering technology to research results—online. The platform will focus on integrating professional systems and building functional modules to deliver multiple technical services and gradually create new sources of profit.

Sugon Solution for Exploration Growth

Sugon uses the distributed storage system ParaStor as the production-data store for the Geology Platform. ParaStor delivers the performance needed for high aggregate bandwidth on large geological files and high IOPS on small files. Data on the platform grows extremely fast. ParaStor scales to the exabyte level, with linear growth in performance and capacity, meeting requirements for processing power and scalability.

ParaStor also has multiple high-reliability designs. Major components such as CPU, memory, power supplies, and fans are redundant, so a single-component failure does not take down the node, and the Geology Platform can provide 7×24 uninterrupted service. Visual operations and unified management of multiple clusters reduce operations pressure and cost. ParaStor offers multi-dimensional resource management, multiple fault-warning mechanisms, and automatic detection and handling of dozens of sub-health states to keep the system stable.

The Geology Platform built on ParaStor helps the Institute use integrated exploration-and-production technical support as a driver: consolidating traditional markets, growing emerging businesses, and expanding revenue and market share.
