Smart classrooms for the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences

Background

Smart-classroom construction is based on IoT and brings together intelligent teaching, attendance, asset management, and other links. It emerged under IoT, cloud computing, big data, and other new information technologies. As smart-campus and informatization work advance, teaching with multimedia equipment has become increasingly popular with teachers and students. As a typical intelligent learning environment, the smart classroom was born under those same technologies. Schools now have more and more data for teaching and demonstration. To meet the university’s smart-classroom needs, this project builds a storage system as infrastructure for smart classrooms.

Project Requirements

Multimedia teaching equipment in smart classrooms is essential to modern teaching and carries day-to-day multimedia instruction for the whole campus. Those devices typically store many kinds of data, including video, audio, and text. To combine AI, the smart-classroom software platform usually tags stored data, recognizes speech, slides, images, and other information, and works with a search platform so teachers and students can manage teaching resources. Through interconnect and live-streaming, students can hold multi-person face-to-face video with teachers, join video call-ins, and share desktops, covering different teaching scenarios. The platform demands both storage performance and high reliability. The University of Chinese Academy of Sciences therefore built a disk-array storage system as infrastructure for smart classrooms.

Solution

Sugon provided the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences with the unified multi-controller storage product DS800-G30H. DS800-G30H unifies SAN and NAS protocols. The same array can provide block services and file sharing. Block services meet the school’s high-IOPS requests; file sharing provides shared file space for video playback.

DS800-G30H uses fully redundant hardware and a cable-free chassis design for long, stable operation. If a single controller fails, workloads fail over automatically. Sugon storage gives the multimedia online-playback system a highly reliable environment. At the software layer, the storage system also provides rich data-protection features including snapshot, clone, replication, and migration, covering data management and protection from physical errors to logical errors, and giving customers a multi-level, full-spectrum storage solution.

DS800-G30H expands flexibly. High-speed SAS 3.0 expansion channels allow flexible disk growth and support SSD, SAS, and NL-SAS media. Customers can allocate storage flexibly to the data characteristics of different business systems, making later expansion straightforward.

The disk array has complete GUI and CLI management interfaces that are simple to operate and convenient for later operations.

Customer Benefits

Sugon provided a unified storage system for smart-classroom construction at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, helping the university complete the work. Sugon gives the smart-classroom multimedia platform high-performance storage with high reliability. Connected to the multimedia platform, the storage system can store massive video and play it back quickly for video learning. Redundant hardware and rich data-protection features keep the system stable over long periods. Management APIs make third-party unified management easy. Combined with the smart-campus software platform, they enable one-stop overall operations that are simple and fast.
