PetroChina: a unified cloud resource pool on Sugon storage


Sugon was the sole winning vendor for CNPC’s unified hardware-and-software procurement of mid-range storage for cloud computing resource-pool construction, winning multiple DS900 storage systems with more than 8 PB of capacity. The project covers business-support systems at multiple data centers including CNPC headquarters, Daqing Drilling, BGP, CNPC Logging, Bohai Drilling, Western Geophysical, and Chuanqing Drilling.

As a large state-owned oil and petrochemical group, CNPC understands how information technology supplies new momentum and has long included informatization in its goal of becoming a world-class comprehensive international energy company, building a unified cloud platform. The platform already covers three group-level data centers in Changping, Jilin, and Karamay, and has moved 48 centrally built systems such as ERP and the gas-station management system to the cloud. As the underlying foundation, CNPC built a unified cloud resource pool so resources at different data centers can be fully shared, uniformly managed, and centrally scheduled, raising utilization and supporting the group’s high-speed development in the big-data era.

Building a cloud resource pool must face many application systems, massive data, and a complex cloud environment. Finding a storage system with both strong storage and disaster-recovery capability became key to smooth construction and operation. The DS900 systems awarded to Sugon will, with multiple strengths, provide storage and remote disaster recovery for core data at the three data centers and some oilfields.

A multi-controller unified-architecture cluster expansion platform

DS900 can add nodes to meet unpredictable capacity and performance requirements, expanding storage incrementally as demand grows. DS900 also provides full protocol support for block and file, meeting connectivity requirements for all host types, technically breaking data silos, and enabling full sharing, unified management, and centralized scheduling of group data.

Local-to-remote active-active and data replication

DS900 active-active technology extends failover from inside a data center to distant sites. Failover and replication together ensure data can be recovered from a disaster in minutes and remain complete. With active-active technology, DS900 can switch rapidly to a remote site and continue operations, maximizing business continuity.

Full adaptation and optimization for the cloud, from data level to application level

DS900 snapshot technology can be integrated into the cloud to provide second-level backup and recovery, including recovery of a single file in the cloud, protecting data with speed and flexibility. DS900 supports direct monitoring and invocation of stored data in the cloud-management platform, greatly raising management convenience, raising cloud efficiency, and truly speeding platform operations.
