Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei regional forecast and warning operations system

Background

Facing severe ambient air pollution in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region in recent years, China National Environmental Monitoring Centre has actively built platforms for regional joint prevention and control and for forecast and early warning. The “Regional Ambient Air Quality Monitoring, Forecast and Warning Center (Phase I)” is an urgent task deployed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection for “regional ambient air quality monitoring, forecast and warning center construction,” in line with the air-pollution prevention action requirements and the severe pollution situation in the region.

Scope of Work

With mature HPC products and a professional solution, Sugon won this project, building an HPC cluster for China National Environmental Monitoring Centre and developing an ambient air-quality numerical forecast modeling system so that the models run stably on the HPC equipment and enter operational use. The core is a multi-model numerical forecast system, composed of an air-quality monitoring network, an emissions-inventory system, a technical-resources and environment system, and the center’s forecast-and-warning operations system and forecast information-service system.

Results

The completed forecast and warning center can forecast and warn of air-pollution processes in Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei and surrounding areas at least seven days ahead, perform potential prediction, and attribute source contributions. With manual correction, the accuracy of heavy-pollution-process forecasts reaches 100%, supporting the ministry in formulating environmental emergency measures in time.
